It is important to approach the situation with empathy and respect. By offering choices, respecting preferences, and encouraging independence, you can empower your loved one to feel more in control of their care decisions. In this article, we will explore practical strategies to foster a collaborative approach and increase the likelihood of your loved one accepting professional care.

Educate Yourself: Before discussing professional care with your loved one, take the time to educate yourself about the specific type of care they need. Understand the benefits and options available, as well as any concerns or misconceptions they may have. This will enable you to have informed and meaningful conversations with your loved one.

Medical Assessment: Review their medical history, current diagnoses, medications, and treatment plans.

Daily Living Needs: Identify assistance required for activities like bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility.

Emotional Support: Consider their mental health needs and how to provide emotional support.

Choose the Right Time and Place: Timing and environment play a crucial role in having a productive conversation about professional care. Choose a time when your loved one is relaxed and receptive to discussions. Find a quiet and comfortable space where they feel safe and supported. Avoid rushing the conversation or bringing it up during moments of stress or tension.

Listen with Empathy: Approach the conversation with empathy and active listening. Allow your loved one to express their concerns, fears, and reservations about professional care. Validate their emotions and show understanding. By actively listening, you can gain insight into their perspective and address their specific concerns.

Highlight the Benefits: When discussing professional care, emphasize the benefits it can bring to your loved one’s well-being. Focus on how it can improve their quality of life, enhance their independence, and provide specialized support. Share success stories or testimonials from others who have benefited from professional care. Help them envision a future where they can thrive with the assistance they need.

Involve Them in Decision-Making:

Empower your loved one by involving them in the decision-making process. Ask for their input and preferences regarding the type of care, caregiver selection, or the setting in which care will be provided. By giving them a sense of control and autonomy, they may be more willing to accept professional care.

Offer Choices: Instead of dictating what needs to be done, offer options

Respect Preferences: If they prefer how a task is done, try to accommodate it. Small adjustments can make a big difference.

Encourage Independence: If they’re capable, allow them to do as much as they can on their own, even if it takes a bit longer.

Address Concerns and Find Solutions: Maintain open and honest communication with your loved one throughout the process of accepting professional care. Whether it’s financial worries, fear of losing independence, or concerns about the quality of care, listen attentively and work together to find solutions. Research financial assistance options, explore in-home care alternatives, or arrange visits to care facilities to alleviate their concerns.

Listen Actively: Give them space to express their fears or frustrations. Sometimes, simply feeling heard can reduce resistance.

Show Understanding: Let them know you understand why they might feel upset or reluctant.

Avoid Arguments: Resist the urge to argue or force care; this can increase their anxiety and resistance.

Seek Support from Professionals: If your loved one remains resistant to professional care, consider seeking support from professionals such as doctors, therapists, or social workers. They can provide expert advice, guidance, and even facilitate conversations with your loved one. Sometimes, hearing from a trusted professional can help alleviate fears and increase acceptance.

Involve a Social Worker or Counselor: They can help mediate difficult situations and provide support for both you and your loved one.

Consider Respite Care: If caregiving becomes overwhelming, respite care can provide temporary relief and give your loved one a change of environment.

Conclusion: Encouraging a loved one to accept professional care requires patience, empathy, and effective communication. By educating yourself, choosing the right time and place, listening with empathy, highlighting the benefits, involving them in decision-making, addressing concerns, and seeking professional support, you can increase the likelihood of your loved one accepting the care they need. Remember to approach the conversation with love, understanding, and a genuine desire to improve their well-being.

Sensory Toys for Dementia https://covenantcolumns.com/2024/04/23/sensory-toys-for-dementia/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 19:44:46 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=379 Read More »Sensory Toys for Dementia]]>

Memory loss is a hard truth for many people. Dementia is a term used to describe many neurologic disorders, all of which have memory loss as a symptom. There is no clear cut reason as to why dementia develops, but there are certain conditions that increase the risk of developing it later on, such as obesity, diabetes, alcoholism, smoking, isolation, inactivity, and some mental health conditions, such as depression. Mood swings are common in those with dementia, sometimes starting prior to other symptoms such as forgetfulness and confusion. Other symptoms include forgetting recent events, becoming confused in familiar places, difficulty performing normal tasks, and issues following conversations. Dementia is estimated to affect 55 million people globally, with an estimated 10 million new cases diagnosed every year. It is key to start a treatment plan as soon as it has been diagnosed to keep other symptoms from being less severe. While we at Covenant Columns are prepared to assist your loved one as they go through these changes with individual care tailored to their needs, it’s important to know that there are many options to enrich the mind of someone suffering from this terrible condition. Here, we provide a few options regarding toys and other items that can be used to stimulate the mind and encourage creativity.

Fidget toys can be used to keep a person occupied. From children with sensory issues, to adults with sensory issues, a fidget toy can help one concentrate on a task, keep a person occupied, or even soothe those who may be anxious, frustrated, agitated, or just plain bored. Things such as worry beads have been around for ages, but with the advent of the fidget spinner (pictured above), there have been plenty of other options on the rise. At Covenant Columns, we work hard to keep all of our memory care residents’ minds stimulated at their appropriate levels. We truly care about every individual’s needs whether they just need reminders or more in-depth care. Fidget toys are a neat way to help those with memory and sensory issues.

Fidget blankets, like the one pictured above from Amazon.com, are a great way to keep those wandering hands occupied. They have a variety of textures and activities that can be pleasing to your loved one with memory problems. Tasks like buttoning buttons, tying shoelaces, and moving beads back and forth are often included with these. Textured areas can be velvety soft or rough like sandpaper. They are often presented like a book for easier clean up and portability. There are also fidget aprons, like this DIY pattern here, that can be used in a similar manner, but are worn instead of presented like a book. If your loved one is more prone to losing things, the apron may be a better option. No need to worry if you can’t provide these though – Covenant Columns has many other activities, such as coloring pages and puzzles, that also help to keep your loved one occupied during their stay.

You may have seen Tangle toys in your child’s classroom, but they can also be a remarkable tool for your loved one with dementia. A Tangle toy can be contorted into a variety of shapes. They’re colorful, can be broken and rebuilt again and again, and some have textures as well. You can even attach multiple Tangle toys to make an even bigger Tangle toy if you wish. It is important to note that, since they can be broken and rebuilt, supervision is a must when playing with them! Due to the fact that they can be broken and rebuilt, they can present a choking hazard if your loved one has a tendency to put things in their mouth. They are extremely portable and can be worn as a bracelet if loss may be an issue. They’re available here on Amazon and in most major stores.

Twiddle Muffs are a brand of sensory toy that uses a muff as its base. Your elderly family member is able to put both their hands in either end and keep them warm or they can interact with a variety of different sensory items such as an orbit ball, beads, a crinkly packet made of buckskin, ribbons, and a hook and loop patch to provide hours of entertainment. They come in many colors and varieties, such as this cat version. There are dog versions available as well, each with the common goal of helping your loved one occupy their time in a constructive way. They are available on Amazon here.

OTHER IDEAS

What if you’re unable to purchase or make one of these particular toys? There’s no need to worry. There are many options to keep your loved one grounded that are not very expensive and enrich your loved one just as much.

  1. Folding Laundry
Folding laundry is a common action that can be seen as therapeutic. The familiarity of soft fabrics and the repetitive motion of folding can soothe your loved one while they perform a constructive task. Stick to easier items to fold such as towels or t-shirts. Some clothing such as button-down shirts may prove to be difficult and can cause feelings of frustration.
  1. Organization Help
Whether it’s a drawer or paperwork, having your loved one assist with “organizing” something such as old papers or junk drawers challenges their critical thinking skills while providing a stimulating activity. Mimicking a common household task can provide a feeling of accomplishment and will also have your loved one feeling as though they are helping with a household task.
  1. Crochet or Knitting

Using a large gauge needle or hook and thick, bright yarn, your loved one can stitch up a storm, helping them with their dexterity and showing off their creativity. Even if one can only cast on or set up a foundation chain, they are still able to show their creativity and have something tangible to show for it.

These are only a few of the many different activities that help soothe and calm a senior with dementia. Every single person is different, so not all activities will work for the same two people. At Covenant Columns, we keep this in mind while we provide care for all of our residents. We believe each person is unique and needs different care. Providing individualized care is the best way to improve patient outcomes. Call us at 804-373-CARE (2273) or drop us a line here.

Achieving Happiness in 2024 https://covenantcolumns.com/2024/01/13/achieving-happiness-in-2024/ Sat, 13 Jan 2024 04:09:29 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=370 Read More »Achieving Happiness in 2024]]>

As we bid farewell to the challenges of the past year, it’s time to embrace a fresh start and set meaningful goals for the new year. For seniors, this is an opportune time to focus on improving overall health, fostering connections, and pursuing personal growth. In this article, we will explore 12 perfect New Year’s resolutions tailored specifically for seniors, providing practical and attainable ways to enhance their quality of life and well-being.

1. Embrace Nutritious Eating Habits

Maintaining a balanced and nutrient-rich diet is crucial at any age, but it becomes even more essential as we grow older. This year, make a resolution to prioritize your health by incorporating more nutritious foods into your meals. Opt for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to fuel your body and boost your energy levels. If you have specific dietary requirements, consult with a nutritionist or healthcare professional to ensure you’re meeting your nutritional needs.

2. Stay Active and Engage in Joyful Movement

Regular physical activity is key to maintaining strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Find a form of exercise that brings you joy and incorporate it into your daily routine. Whether it’s taking leisurely walks, practicing yoga, dancing, or participating in water aerobics, find a method of movement that suits your abilities and interests. Consider joining local senior fitness classes or utilizing fitness apps tailored for seniors to stay motivated and engaged.

3. Cultivate Lifelong Learning

Learning should never cease, regardless of age. Challenge yourself to acquire new knowledge or develop a skill that piques your interest. Whether it’s learning a musical instrument, mastering a foreign language, or exploring a new hobby, lifelong learning stimulates the mind and promotes cognitive health. Look for local classes, online courses, or community workshops that cater to seniors, providing opportunities for personal growth and intellectual stimulation.

4. Foster Meaningful Connections

Social connections play a vital role in our emotional well-being. Make it a priority this year to cultivate new friendships or invest time in nurturing existing relationships. Join local community groups, volunteer for causes that resonate with you, or participate in social activities offered by senior centers or retirement communities. Engaging in meaningful conversations and shared experiences can combat feelings of loneliness and enhance overall happiness.

5. Organize and Simplify Your Life

Decluttering and organizing your living space can provide a sense of calm and clarity. Take this opportunity to sort through your belongings, donate or discard items you no longer need, and create an organized environment that promotes peace of mind. Additionally, consider organizing important documents, such as wills, financial records, and medical information, to ensure everything is easily accessible when needed.

6. Prioritize Quality Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. If you struggle with sleep-related issues, take steps to improve your sleep hygiene. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, create a comfortable sleep environment, and limit exposure to electronic devices before bed. If necessary, consult with a healthcare professional to address any underlying sleep disorders or concerns.

7. Nurture Your Creative Side

Engaging in creative activities can be a source of joy and fulfillment. Explore your artistic talents or develop new ones by trying out various forms of creativity. Whether it’s painting, sculpting, writing, or playing a musical instrument, creative endeavors provide an outlet for self-expression and promote mental well-being. Consider joining art classes, writing workshops, or community theater groups to connect with like-minded individuals and unleash your creativity.

8. Preserve Your Legacy

Your life story is a precious gift to pass down to future generations. Take the time to document your experiences, memories, and wisdom for your loved ones to cherish. Consider creating a scrapbook, compiling photo albums, writing a memoir, or recording videos sharing your life’s journey. By preserving your legacy, you create a lasting connection with your descendants and leave a meaningful impact on future generations.

9. Embrace Technology

Don’t let the rapid pace of technology intimidate you. Embrace the digital age and explore the benefits it offers for communication, entertainment, and learning. Learn how to use smartphones, tablets, or computers to connect with loved ones through video calls or social media platforms. Utilize online resources to access news, books, movies, and educational content. Embracing technology opens a world of possibilities and allows you to stay connected with the people and experiences that matter most to you.

10. Embody Authenticity and Openness

Life is too short to hold back your thoughts and feelings. Embrace authenticity and express yourself honestly and openly. Have the courage to engage in meaningful conversations, share your opinions, and express your emotions. By being true to yourself and fostering genuine connections, you’ll create a more fulfilling and enriching life.

Conclusion

As we step into the new year, seniors can set meaningful resolutions that promote health, happiness, and personal growth. By embracing nutritious eating habits, staying active, fostering connections, organizing their lives, prioritizing sleep, nurturing creativity, preserving their legacy, embracing technology, and embodying authenticity, seniors can embark on a fulfilling and enriching journey in 2023. Let this new year be a time of self-discovery, growth, and joy as you strive to achieve your goals and live your best life. At Covenant Columns (www.covenantcolumns.com) we provide help with all activities of daily living in a home-like setting.

Maintaining Communication With Your Loved One https://covenantcolumns.com/2023/12/27/maintaining-communication-with-your-loved-one/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 01:54:06 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=364 Read More »Maintaining Communication With Your Loved One]]>

Communication is key for anyone living in an assisted living facility! Maintaining communication with your loved one is as easy as 1, 2, 3! From visits to the facility, to phone calls, to even texts and emails, communicating with your loved one while they’re with us is a breeze! There are so many ways one can keep their relationships alive after their loved one has moved into an assisted living facility. Here, we’ll go over a few ways to communicate when you have a busy schedule!

Physical visits

Of course, nothing beats coming to our home and just hanging out with your loved one for a little while. In fact, we encourage it! Studies have shown that residents with frequent visitors have a higher quality of life as opposed to those that may not have as many visitors. Showing you care by visiting and just spending time is one of the many ways a family member can still be involved with their loved one’s care. Visits can be especially important for those that have dementia. Familiarity is very important when one is experiencing memory loss. It can be scary to have to move to a new place and it can be very hard to adjust when you’re not sure who you’re talking to or why exactly you’re in this strange place. Seeing you may help your loved one feel safe and secure during a stressful transition. Visits greatly increase patient outcomes and they have the added benefit of you being able to be a better advocate of your loved one’s care and health. It’s good practice to communicate your visit with the facility. This way, they can let you know the best times to come in (such as morning, afternoon or after a meal or therapy appointment). A visit can be as long as you wish, we just ask you to keep your loved one’s health in mind; if they’re tired, it may be good to let them rest. If you’re interested in taking your loved one out for the day, make sure you check with their respected facility regarding their policies regarding outings.

But…

What happens when one isn’t able to make frequent visits? How can we help maintain the relationship we have with our loved one when we’re not able to physically be there? Below are some other options:

Video Calls

The onset of COVID-19 changed a lot of things pertaining to visiting those in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals. There were plenty of creative ways to visit loved ones (like window visits), but the staple among many communities was the amazing video call. Using iPads, residents were able to FaceTime with their loved ones. It’s not the same as being able to be in the room, but it sure does help to see a familiar face during a trying time. You don’t need an iPad to make video calls either – apps like Zoom and Skype are available. Most modern smartphones can handle these apps, and of course computers can handle them as well.

Nothing beats seeing a familiar face! A video call can work in a pinch when you’re not able to make the trip to the facility. If you don’t have an iPad or other tablet to give, be sure to check with the facility to see if this particular communication option is available. It can be challenging to set it up on both ends, but once it’s done, a quick video call can take less than 10 minutes of your time, and you have the added benefit of being able to see your loved one’s face while talking to them!

Phone Calls
Phone calls are another way to communicate with your loved one. Whether it’s a personal cell phone or calling the facility, hearing your voice can be enough to make your loved one’s day a little brighter. Calling to check in or just to say hello can have an insurmountable impact on your loved one’s outcome. It offers them the chance to connect with you while they’re in a different environment. It’s an easy way to let them know you love and care about them, and it can take less than 5 minutes of your time to do! We are always happy to help our residents make phone calls on our phone or their personal cell phone!

Text Messages

If your loved one is tech savvy, a text message can be a great way to let them know you’re thinking of them! They can take less than a minute to send, making them perfect for those on the go. They can also be a more discreet way of communicating if that is preferred. Modern smartphones can send other images too, such as emojis, .gifs, and pictures to help communicate and keep your loved one in the loop. The ability to send pictures is a very useful tool – imagine how wonderful your loved one would feel if they received a picture of the family at the next get-together! You can also use texts to keep your loved one informed of small things going on in life. This helps your loved one feel as if they are still a cherished member of the family, in the loop on the goings on, and is still involved in the lives of those they love most.

Emails
When we think of communication, we don’t necessarily think of email. Sure, we use it in business settings, but can emailing your loved one really be a way to maintain contact with them? It sure can! Especially if your loved one enjoys using computers. Emails are very popular with the senior community, with approximately 84.1% of that particular population using them regularly.

If needed, be sure to adjust the settings for your loved one, or walk them through it. Many email services have adaptability settings that allow for larger fonts and other services, like the ability to dictate emails and have them read to you. Of course you are able to send many more images than a text message will allow, and having those pictures readily available is a treat for your loved one!

Following email etiquette is important too. Things like not using all caps and clear subject lines are important in both a business and more casual setting. Make sure you take the time to discuss these with your loved one if this is a preferred communication method. An email can take about 5 minutes of your day to compose and send – and you can even be at work to send one!

Mail

Letters, cards, packages – you name it, and it can be sent miles and miles away. Whether it’s just a postcard or something big like a stuffed animal, sending mail to your loved one is another way to communicate with them and let them know you care. It’s a small thing that can have the biggest impact on your loved one’s disposition and their health overall.

Always be sure to check with your loved one’s facility regarding acceptable gifts to send, some may have different restrictions regarding food and other items. A card or letter doesn’t take much time to write, and it definitely doesn’t take time to shop on Amazon – something a lot of us do almost daily. Why not take the time to shop for them when shopping for yourself?

Conclusion
Maintaining communication is good for both you and your loved one. Your loved one gets to communicate with you just as much as they would if they were still at home, and you get the added benefit of being able to monitor their care as much as you wish. There are so many ways to communicate and show you care, so it should be easy to find the best method of communication with your loved one. Tailoring communication to you and your loved one is paramount to their stay at any facility. Communication is key, and we want to make sure you’re able to maintain that link in the most convenient way possible. If you have any particular questions about how we at Covenant Columns help bridge the communication gap, feel free to call Covenant Columns at 804-373-CARE (2273)

Senior Friendly Organization Tips https://covenantcolumns.com/2023/12/09/senior-friendly-organization-tips/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 18:13:29 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=358 Read More »Senior Friendly Organization Tips]]>

Do you have too much clutter? It can be hard to maintain a neat and tidy home as we get older – some conditions, such as arthritis, can make it hard for us to move as much as we used to. This can cause us to be unable to do some of the tasks that help us maintain a happy lifestyle. Fear not, these tips and tricks for seniors can help you keep a happy, healthy, and clean home!

Decluttering and organizing your home is one way that can help with anxiety. Studies have shown that some people experience an increase in anxiety when they are in a messy home. If one is unable to maintain a clean household, then it’s possible they have high anxiety. Reducing the amount of clutter in your home can help ease stress and anxiety, and we’re here to make sure you have the tools you need to maintain your independence and live a clutter-free life.

Clutter and Anxiety

There is a correlation between anxiety and clutter. The more cluttered a person’s area is, the more anxiety they may have. Our brains are programmed in favor of order and organization – and a messy home is not usually neat and orderly. This can cause issues with focusing, and cause extreme feelings of overwhelm. These distractions can also cause a mental overload; so many things need to be done, but where can we start? Everything around a cluttered space is begging for attention, causing us to lose our focus. It’s important to know that one’s home doesn’t need to be spotless, but it’s important to have a nice clean space to relax and unwind, especially after a long day. These tips may seem like big things, but they can be broken down into smaller, bite-sized pieces if needed.

Start With One Single Room

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Decluttering is no different. Starting with just one room in the home is an easy way to prevent one from becoming overwhelmed with the chaos of having a messy home. This doesn’t mean we move things from one room to another, this means we do our best to find logical, reasonable spaces for things with easy access to them, if needed. If it’s too much to start with the whole room, try doing half a room or even just a small section of a room. Just clearing even the smallest space is enough to get started with less anxiety and more calmness. Spending just 5 minutes a day tidying up is enough to get started feeling less anxious and more calm.

Storage Options

There are so many storage options available! One of the best options for seniors is using clear containers for storage. This allows all items packed away to be seen, keeping confusion at bay. Using a computer to create labels for the totes or even writing labels in clear, legible handwriting also helps one to know what’s inside at a glance. This can help if clear containers aren’t available. Clear containers can also be used to store medications and other medical support items such as ointments, braces, powders, and others. They are easy to clean and can be reused over and over – saving money in the process.

Baskets are another wonderful option; various items such as throw blankets and pillows can just be thrown into them while still maintaining cleanliness. They are perfect for those that may not be able to always put things away neatly. One can just throw their items into the basket and forget about it for a while. There are so many varieties, so finding some to match your decor won’t be hard to find.

Shelves are for a lot more than knick-knacks! They are also a powerful tool in organization and storage! One can store their totes and some baskets on them. If your loved one has problems bending or reaching, keeping the shelves at waist height is a must. This allows them to maintain their independence while still keeping a clean space for themselves.

Get Rid of Duplicate Items

Duplicate items tend to accumulate as we get older. Sometimes we get something new, even if we already have something similar at home. A lot of us think to remove the old version to make way for the new one, but not everyone is keen to do this. Getting rid of duplicate items saves space and time. If your loved one has a preferred version of an item such as a mug, dish set, or even a potato masher, it’s important to keep those and get rid of any extras. As we age, other things start to accumulate as well, such as lotions, sunscreen, makeup, toiletries, and other things like washcloths, bedding, and towels. Taking the time to sort through all these duplicate items can help your loved one stay organized, and allows time for you to bond. When all the duplicate items are sorted, they can be donated or disposed of; whichever is preferred or needed.

Create a Donation System

Another option is setting aside items that aren’t used often and waiting for a certain period of time before donating them. This can allow one to see exactly how often they use a specific item. It’s important to agree on the timeframe for these items. Whether it’s a couple of weeks or a couple of months, seeing how often an item is worn, used, or otherwise can help one decide if donating it is appropriate. Donation is also a good option for clothing, and those duplicate items mentioned previously. Studies have shown that donating those used items can release endorphins and other feel-good chemicals, creating what is known as the “Helper’s High”. This can make it easier for your loved one to let certain items go. Knowing they will be used and loved by another person is sometimes enough to be able to let it go.

Other Tips

Organization doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes time and patience to make sure your senior’s home is perfectly adapted to their needs. This can take weeks, months, even years if there is enough clutter. Tools such as grabbers can help if your loved one has problems bending, along with our tip of keeping shelving at waist height. One can also hire a professional organizer that specializes in senior homes if they feel that the task is too overwhelming, if they need ideas, or if they just don’t know where to start. It’s important to check on your loved one as well to make sure the organization plan is working or needs to be adjusted. It’s an ongoing process and with help from family, your senior loved one will be able to maintain their independence for years to come.

What is Assisted Living Facility? https://covenantcolumns.com/2023/11/27/what-is-assisted-living-facility/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 17:30:13 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=350 Read More »What is Assisted Living Facility?]]>
Assisted Living Activities

Assisted Living – a lot of us have heard the term, but never really thought about what it entails. Is it similar to living in a nursing home? Do you keep your independence? What about meals and socializing? So many of these questions can be answered with a quick phone call to us at 804-373-CARE, but if you’re in a rush or just want a little info, this article is a good start.

So, what exactly is assisted living?

Assisted living facilities promote independence but offer a little bit of help – medications are managed for you, meals are provided in a lovely dining area or sent to your apartment, and minor help with normal tasks, such as getting dressed, from a qualified professional. Unlike a skilled nursing facility, or nursing home, assisted living facilities usually have a more home-like feel as opposed to a hospital-like feel. Some facilities even have apartment style living, giving one more freedom regarding space and decor choices. One can live like they’re at their own home rather than at a facility. Ours is one of many that allows the luxury of one’s own space. Assisted living is recommended for those that just need a little extra help, but have maintained most of their cognition.

What does assisted living provide?

Just because it’s a home-like environment, doesn’t mean residents don’t get professional medical care. Assisted living facilities provide a plethora of amenities – with most offering an emergency medical alert system, access to physicians, PT/OT, landscaping, and of course, a private living quarters. One can feel safe and secure while still being the independent person they’ve always been. Assisted living provides just a little assistance with daily tasks. Medications are maintained for you and if one requires light assistance with tasks or just needs a watchful eye, the staff is always able to help you. Residents are free to socialize with one another and participate in activities, such as outings to a local park or store, fairly often. Some even have classes, such as yoga and other fitness classes, or may have workshops on things like crafts. Most assisted living facilities also provide financial & housekeeping assistance, and medical transport to appointments. It is important to note that some facilities may not accept medical insurance as a method of payment, meaning one would have to pay privately. Medicaid or Medicare may be able to assist in some cases, though.

What is the difference between assisted living and skilled nursing?

Skilled nursing facilities, or SNFs, are what many people think of when they think of the term “nursing home”- a lot of residents are in hospital beds, in a hospital-esque room, usually with a roommate and a curtain to divide them. Care is more intense as well – SNFs assist with all functions, like dressing, bathing, and walking among others. They provide a more medical, and sometimes less personal, experience. Assisted living facilities promote independence by allowing residents to live in their own apartment or room, and while they can provide some assistance with normal activities of daily living, it’s not nearly as intense as a SNF can be. SNFs also provide services such as speech, physical, and occupational therapies. Skilled nursing facilities are a wonderful option for those that need a lot of assistance – they provide exponentially more care than an assisted living facility can give. Meals are usually done as a group and are in a more cafeteria-like setting. SNFs do have activities as well, but they are not as intense as those provided by an assisted living facility. Skilled nursing facilities are usually covered at least partially by insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid (if applicable). In a nutshell, skilled nursing facilities assist residents with every aspect of living, while assisted living facilities are more for those that need just a little help with regular activities.

Why Choose Assisted Living?

Assisted living facilities provide all the comforts of home while providing a watchful eye on you or your loved one. It’s a great choice for anyone that wants to maintain their independence while getting minor help with things such as dressing, housekeeping, and laundry. One is able to live in their own space and can decorate it as they so choose, giving even more comfort and choices for you or your loved one during their/your stay. Maintaining independence is an important aspect of life as we get older, and finding the right place that keeps the balance between assistance and independence can be hard. At Covenant Columns, we want to make sure you’re making the right choice. Our team does everything in its power to maintain your comfort and independence. When you’re here, you’re home. Space Planning for Dementia https://covenantcolumns.com/2023/10/21/space-planning-for-dementia/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 02:29:38 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=312 Read More »Space Planning for Dementia]]>

Memory-related disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s cause significant challenges for patients and their loved ones, including memory loss, confusion, and difficulty performing daily tasks. Senior living organizations are gaining popularity for creating a safe environment for seniors transitioning to memory care, like Covenant Columns (www.covenantcolumns.com). One of their key services is space design replication, which aims to recreate a familiar setting for patients to alleviate anxiety and confusion. This article explores the potential benefits of space planning replication in memory care.

How Space Planning Replication Benefits Dementia Patients

Seniors with memory problems often find it difficult to recognize familiar environments and objects. However, duplicating their home space can offer patients with a sense of comfort and security, ultimately lowering their stress levels and enhancing their quality of life. Recent studies have demonstrated that this approach can also help seniors preserve their independence by reducing their need for extra help with daily chores. For people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, new situations can be overwhelming, resulting in transfer trauma and challenges such as sadness, anxiety, and lack of appetite. Planning out their new space and making it feel like home reduces the chance of transfer shock.

How Family Members Benefit from Space Planning Replication

Seeing a loved one suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can be difficult and painful. Space planning replication is a personalized service that helps families with dementia or Alzheimer’s care to ensure their loved ones are comfortable and secure in their new space. Professional organizers and movers work with families to ensure the senior is comfortable with their most important items, allowing them to focus on quality time together without worrying about transitional logistics.

The Importance of Hiring an Experienced Move Management Company

It is critical to hire a senior moving management firm with experience in memory care services. These companies should have a thorough understanding of what people with dementia are going through and the expertise to precisely recreate their environment. An experienced organization will also understand how to modify the duplicated environment to meet the needs and progress of the senior’s condition. Companies that specialize in assisting Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients place a high priority on guaranteeing the client’s comfort and lowering the danger of transfer stress.

The Role of Lighting in Memory Care

In addition to space planning replication, lighting plays a significant role in memory care. Good lighting design can greatly enhance the well-being and quality of life for individuals with dementia. Senior Electrical Engineer Sarah Gengelbach emphasizes the importance of even and consistent lighting in memory care facilities. Dark spots throughout a space can be disorienting and provoke anxiety for individuals with dementia. By ensuring that the lighting is evenly spaced and provides the right amount of light, residents can move more easily within the space and feel more secure.

The Impact of Color on Dementia Care

The color of light is often overlooked in the design of memory care facilities, but it can have a profound impact on individuals with dementia. The color of light can influence the body’s circadian rhythm, which affects sleep-wake cycles and overall well-being. Warm reds and oranges in the morning can help mimic the sun and wake up the body, while white light at midday can replicate the brightness of the sun. Repeating red and orange light in the evening can simulate the sunset and help the body settle into sleep. By utilizing the appropriate colors of light, memory care facilities can promote a more natural and soothing environment for individuals with dementia.

The Benefits of Smaller Environments in Dementia Care

Research has shown that smaller environments are healthier for individuals with dementia compared to large-scale memory care communities. Smaller settings minimize visual and aural overstimulation, reducing disorientation and agitation. Sundara, a memory care community, emphasizes the importance of small environments in memory and dementia care. Smaller settings allow for personalized care, attention to individual preferences, and more frequent interaction. Residents in smaller environments experience lower levels of anxiety and better overall well-being.

The Role of Activities and ADLs in Small Memory Care Facilities

Smaller memory care facilities also offer benefits when it comes to activities and activities of daily living (ADLs). Research indicates that residents in smaller home-like settings are more engaged in activities and have higher participation rates. These settings promote higher functioning in ADLs such as eating, drinking, dressing, and toileting. Personalized rooms and larger windows in a more home-like setting contribute to better eating habits, social engagement, and a slower rate of deterioration in daily activities. Smaller environments also facilitate better wayfinding, reducing confusion and improving orientation for individuals with dementia.

The Impact of a Relaxing Environment and Well-Trained Staff

A relaxed and soothing environmental ambiance, with less noise and a more home-like setting, can have a positive impact on individuals with dementia. This type of environment promotes relaxation, reduces unhealthy sitting for extended periods, decreases wandering, and lowers anxiety levels. In smaller memory care facilities, staff members can adjust and tailor activities to the individual needs, preferences, and cognitive abilities of residents. A person-centered care approach is more easily achieved in smaller spaces, leading to better cognitive stimulation and overall well-being for individuals with dementia.

Conclusion

The importance of space planning replication in memory care cannot be overstated. By creating a familiar and secure environment, individuals with dementia can experience reduced anxiety and improved quality of life. Small environments, combined with thoughtful lighting design and personalized care, further enhance the well-being of individuals with dementia. The research supports the benefits of smaller memory care facilities, including higher engagement in activities, better ADL functioning, improved wayfinding, and a more relaxed environment. By prioritizing these elements, memory care communities can provide the best possible care for individuals with dementia, promoting their autonomy, independence, and overall well-being. • Offer Kindness in a Queue

Gladly allow someone to go ahead of you the next time you’re in line. This act of kindness demonstrates empathy and can brighten someone’s day, especially if they appear to be in a hurry or could benefit from a pick-me-up. It’s a small gesture that can have a significant impact on someone’s mood.

  • Extend Your Seat on Public Transport

If you’re on public transportation and see someone looking for a seat, consider offering yours. Standing for long periods of time can be exhausting, and giving up your seat demonstrates compassion and consideration for others. It’s a simple gesture that can brighten someone’s day.

  • Buy Food for Those in Need

Food pantries usually experience shortages of essential items such as pasta and canned vegetables. Consider purchasing a few extra items to donate to a local food pantry the next time you go grocery shopping. This act of kindness benefits those in need by feeding and supporting them.

  • Send a Letter of Encouragement

In this digital age, receiving a handwritten letter can be a heartwarming surprise. Spend some time writing a letter or sending a thoughtful message via social media to someone who could use some encouragement. It’s a small gesture that can have a big impact on someone’s day.

  • Volunteer Your Time

Volunteering is an effective way to make a difference in the lives of others. Whether you volunteer at a local food bank, an after-school program, or spend time with someone who is lonely, your time and presence can bring joy and support to those in need.

  • Play with a Pet

Animals have a special ability to bring joy and comfort. Spend some quality time playing with your pet if you have one. If you do not have a pet, consider volunteering at a local animal shelter. You will not only bring joy to the animals, but their presence will also lift your spirits.

  • Give Someone Flowers

Flowers could brighten any space and bring joy into people’s lives. To show someone you care, give them a flower bouquet. Someone you know, a family member, or even a stranger, could benefit from a little beauty in their day. Flowers are widely recognized as a universal symbol of love and kindness.

  • Surprise Someone with a Delivery

Delivering a surprise gift of coffee, beer, or flowers is a fun way to show someone you’re thinking of them. It might be a simple act of kindness that puts a smile to their face and lets them know they are appreciated. Send a treat right to their door.

  • Donate to a Cause You’re Passionate About

Everyone is passionate about a different cause. Consider contributing to a charity or organization that shares your values. Your contribution, whether it is to an animal shelter, educational programs, or medical research, can make a significant difference in the lives of others.

  • Pay It Forward in a Line

Consider paying for the person in front of you the next time you’re in line to pay for something. This act of kindness can be a pleasant surprise for the recipient and may inspire them to pass it on to someone else. It starts a chain reaction of positivity and generosity that can make many people’s days better.

  • Treat a Friend to a Night Out

Treat a friend who has been stressed or is going through a difficult time to a night out. It could be a coffee date, dinner, or any other activity they enjoy. Your act of kindness can give them a much-needed break and show them that they are supported and cared for.

  • Offer to Babysit

Connecting with your neighbors fosters a sense of belonging and support. When you see your neighbor outside, ask about their well-being and whether they require any assistance. Giving a helping hand can help to strengthen relationships and make your community a more caring and compassionate place.

  • Practice Self-Care

Taking care of yourself is a selfless act that extends to others. Make self-care a priority by engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. • Leave a Nice Note

Sometimes all it takes is a few encouraging words to make someone’s day. Send a thoughtful message or a handwritten note to someone you care about. Let them know how much you appreciate them and how much they have influenced your life. A simple act of kindness can cause a positive ripple effect.

It is important to remember that acts of kindness should be genuine and come from a place of empathy and compassion.

The goal is to make a positive impact, not to seek recognition or reward. Be mindful of cultural sensitivities and individual preferences when practicing acts of kindness.

Benefits of Sunlight https://covenantcolumns.com/2023/06/24/benefits-of-sunlight/ Sat, 24 Jun 2023 03:01:41 +0000 https://covenantcolumns.com/?p=296 Read More »Benefits of Sunlight]]> The Benefits of Sun Exposure for Seniors: Enhancing Health and Wellbeing

As the sun’s warm rays embrace us and summer begins, it’s important to remember that sunshine provides more than a pleasant feeling on our skin. Exposure to sunlight regularly has been shown to provide several health benefits, especially for elderly people. While it is important to take caution and protect the skin from dangerous UV rays, harnessing the power of the sun can considerably contribute to seniors’ general well-being. In this article, we explore how seniors can tap into the power of the sun to enhance their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

  1. Harnessing the Power of Vitamin D – Sun exposure can increase the body’s defenses, improve sleep, improve mental well-being, aid in weight control, and promote healthy aging in seniors.
  • Management of Arthritis and Bone Health – Sun exposure on a regular basis has been suggested to promote bone health and joint stiffness. Sunlight promotes calcium absorption in the body, resulting in stronger bones and a lower incidence of fractures in the elderly. Furthermore, the warmth of the sun may reduce arthritis-related joint pain, enhancing mobility and overall quality of life.
  • The Connection Between Sunlight and Emotional Wellbeing – Sunlight has a major impact on our mental state, and its effects go beyond simply improving our mood. According to research, there is a link between sun exposure and serotonin production, a neurotransmitter renowned for its involvement in mood regulation and happiness promotion. Regular exposure to sunlight can improve emotional stability, lower the risk of depression, and promote general mental well-being in seniors.

As we enjoy the summer season and the warmth of the sun, it is vital to realize the numerous benefits it brings for the health and well-being of seniors. Regular sun exposure can be a strong tool in encouraging healthy aging, from improving sleep patterns and boosting the immune system to strengthening mental stability and assisting with weight control. However, striking a balance and protecting the skin from any injury is critical. Seniors can experience the positive effects of sunshine on their general health and quality of life by harnessing the power of the sun wisely and following the advice mentioned.
